Fraunhofer Lines

2015

Produced for the exhibitions The Glomar Response at Nome Berlin and Art in the Age of Asymmetric Warfare at Witte De With Rotterdam, the Fraunhofer Lines are a series of prints which document the processes of redaction in official documents.

The series uses documents obtained via Freedom of Information and other requests to government bodies including the British Police, Home Office and Transport networks, the US Senate, and the Dutch Air Investigation Board, which have all been redacted by the organisations to hide information. The documents are processed using software to identify and visualise the proportion of redacted information.

The design of the the series is based on scientific diagrams of the spectral lines in the suns emissions first identifed by Joseph Von Fraunhofer, which led to the investigation of the chemical composition f the atmospheres of the Sun and the Earth, and are still used in chemical analysis and satellite remote viewing today.
