Windmill 03 (for Walter Segal)

2022

Created for the exhibition Signs of Life, which takes its name from the first feature film by Werner Herzog (Lebenszeichen, 1968) in which three German soldiers on patrol on a Greek island come across a vast field of spinning windmills, and one of them is driven mad by the experience. Windmill 03 (for Walter Segal) is a recreation of a traditional Greek windmill from the original location of the film: the Lasithi plateau in Crete. Created out of surplus wood from a self-building project, itself inspired by the German-British socialist architect Walter Segal, Windmill 03 (for Walter Segal) restages this rapturous, rupturous encounter as an opportunity for education, environmental recovery, and a renewal of our common agency.
